John Bell is the principal owner of Waypoint Properties, LLC based in Hinsdale, Illinois. Having an extensive and deep background in retail properties, John has built a solid reputation in the shopping center industry as creative and innovative real estate expert. With over twenty years of experience, John has a proven track record and in-depth knowledge regarding project development, site acquisitions, entitlements, construction, renovation, site planning, feasibility analysis, financing, leasing, marketing, and sales. He has built trusting relationships with local municipalities, brokers, retailers, shopping center owners and industry specialists throughout his career. John’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement has resulted in award winning projects and customer satisfaction that has exceeded expectations. His project and industry experience is quite broad ranging from large big box developments with anchor tenants such as Target, Kohl’s, Home Depot, and Dominick’s, to smaller strip centers, downtown urban projects and historical renovations.

Formally the Director of Shopping Center Development/Chicago, IL for Ryan Companies, based in Minneapolis, MN. John has served as Vice President and Managing Director/Retail Properties for NAI Hiffman based in Oakbrook, IL. He was also Senior Vice President/Retail Properties for Draper and Kramer, Incorporated located in Chicago, IL.

John earned an MBA degree in 1998 from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a BA degree from DePaul University in 1996. He is a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), Senior Certified Leasing Specialist (SCLS) with the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and a licensed Real Estate Broker for the Sate of Illinois.

He has written numerous articles for industry publications such as Midwest Real Estate News, Value Retail News and Shopping Center World. John is a contributing author for two books currently published by the ICSC entitled “Leasing Small Shopping Centers” and “Finance for Non-financial Professionals.” He is a Faculty Member of the ICSC John T. Riordan School for Professional Development which still uses his contributing materials and course outlines. He has been a guest speaker and/or panel participant for various ICSC programs and served six years on the CLS Committee where he helped develop test questions used for the CLS exam.
